Yes, this was a major f-up. He wins the battle and loses the war.

A chiapaneco parable - You may have heard of the Zapatista movement in Chiapas, led at first by an entity known as El Subcomandante Marcos. Well, a few years ago a major push was made by elements of the Army, the state police, and the paramilitary goons to find and destroy Marcos. They believed that he was in the area of a few small villages just north of San Andr‚s Larrainzar, and swept the area thoroughly and brutally. A number of people were shot or beaten, all of whom were unarmed and few of whom were males of fighting age. They did not find Marcos - their spies had lied, and he was elsewhere. It is his custom always to be elsewhere.

A few days later, there were T-shirts for sale in the streets that had the picture of Marcos in a pasamonta¤a ['balaclava' in English] smoking his pipe on the front of them. On the back in large bright block letters were the words TODOS SOMOS MARCOS
- 'We are all Marcos'

Classic quotes from the twilight world of Bay Street officialdom:

"I have not spoken to a single, responsible global investor or informed analyst or other educated observer who feels the reputation of the exchange is tarnished." TSE president Rowland Fleming quoted in The Financial Post on the Bre-X international scandal, May 17 1997.

"That's your perception," says Rowland Fleming to a reporter who suggests that the TSE's reputation has been tarnished by the YBM Magnex international scandal. "I don't believe it has," Fleming is quoted as saying in The Financial Post on May 29 1998.
