(November 5, 1997) Digitcom Interactive Video Network has licensed Voxware's RT29 compression/decompression (codec) technology, enabling Digitcom to integrate high-quality voice transmission over the Internet with regular telephone equipment. Digitcom plans to offer the first UNIX-based Internet Protocol (IP) telephony suite of services using MetaVoiceT RT29 codec from Voxware, a Princeton-based developer of advanced speech and audio technologies. Digitcom believes that working with Voxware in designing this application will produce the best compression available today.(November 5, 1997) Digitcom Interactive Video Network has licensed Voxware's RT29 compression/decompression (codec) technology, enabling Digitcom to integrate high-quality voice transmission over the Internet with regular telephone equipment. >First the backbone goes in place...then they put content on the backbone.<

I certainly like the bullishness of that, but streaming video is still a bit like Valhalla. I'm assuming the technology is still focusing on quality reproduction of voice, which's no mean feat. And video is a number of years out.

Interesting too how Internet telephony has re-focused as it's matured to one's "telephone", not one's "computer". That's still a big mental shift for my everyday thinking -- that your accessing the Internet when you pick up your phone. I'm still remembering a few years back when the first IT software came out -- "Hey, you can talk to your friends in Germany for free, but first you have to do this and this ...and it probably won't sound very good, but it's fun!" We've come a long way.

But then we're back to video, and it's either back onto the computer screen, or else phones that're still mostly part of science fiction. Time moves on ...
