I'm not saying that SAP has intentions on the OS or desktop space. I'm saying that SAP has a clear shot and the critical mass necessary to enjoy the same network wealth effects (and stock appreciation) that Microsoft enjoyed. Microsoft and SAP do not compete with each other.

SAP clearly dominates its category worldwide. Its product is essentially a platform. Its sales momentum is awesome. SAP has no threat to its market position. Its product is the safe choice, and it apparently works very well. Whole companies (Intel and Microsoft for two examples) run on it. R3 is becoming the world-wide standard.
