Starowl, Device Bay is dead but this makes 1394 all the more important.

Device bay was a crock, nobody has ever wanted one of these things, however 1394 offers the capability to do multimaster control and communications. This is far more important than device bay could ever be, it means, for instant, that your camcoder can communicate directly with your TV and decide between them which is the best format that they both support, at the same time it can query your home theater system and send out the best supported format, i.e. AC-3, prologic, MPEG2.

The problem with "firewire" is getting the ball rolling, it is a catch 22 problem where no one wants to add the expense until everyone has it. For this reason it is worth looking at markets where 1394 offers some "point to point" features that make it valuable. The best application for this is "hard disks" this is why so many people are looking at the HDD market and trying to shoe-horn 1394 into this socket.
