I passed on the rumor regarding Compaq preannouncing bad news tomorrow. I may have been premature.

My apologies to those on both the Dell and Compaq threads.

Jim -
I am always interested in your views, even on those rare occasions when our opinions differ <gg>.
I think that the inventory shortages you refer to are the consumer products. CPQ is in the middle of the consumer product transition (which I have discussed in some detail here and on the CPQ thread before), and shortages in the stores are to be expected - the consumer distribution model leans toward flushing every product at model transition. This particular rollout was slightly delayed to accommodate the Win98 launch, so product was held until the new OS could legally be loaded.

To understand the channel stuffing issue we need to look at commercial products in the traditional channel (vanstar, ingram, microage, etc.) and see how they are doing. The information I have indicates that CPQ may have overshot slightly (inventory of some products is less than the 2 to 4 week target) but is essentially on target. I would be very interested in any info you have which indicates otherwise.
