Hi Shlomi! Sometimes it helps to put things in perspective to get the opinion of someone who is not personally involved. To do so I sought the opinion of a close personal friend who is one of the very top management in Sun Microsystems. I asked him what he thought about the fact that of their 235 VocalTec employees 170 were involved in research. I also described the great concern of stock holders about the enormous fluctuations in the value of the stock, and how little VocalTec seemed to be concerned. I also told him how reluctant VocalTec seemed to be to put out what their CFO Yahal Zilka referred to as "vaporware." This was his answer: "Regarding the news that Vocaltec is plowing lots of its resources into research, I infer the following: 1) VocalTec appears to be engaged in a long term strategy to win market share rather than to artificially inflate the short term performance of their stock. This is consistent with their policy of not announcing "vapor ware". 2) To engage in long term strategic investments requires that their basic financial position is strong, and/or that their investors understand and endorse this strategy. If they were undercapitalized, they would have to pay more attention to the quarter to quarter fluctuations in their stock price, a policy that leads so many U.S. companies to make strategically stupid decisions. 3) To the extent that VocalTec and other Israeli companies can successfully engage in a long-term strategically sound strategy, over time, they will be able to successfully compete with U.S. companies, who continue to be forced to make short term tactical decisions. It will be interesting to see how long it takes for U.S. companies to wake up to the fact that this is happening to them." Shlomi, for whatever it is worth this is the unbiased opinion from an extremely qualified person with no conflict of interest about the strategy of VocalTec. I would appreciate your reaction. Kindest regards, Don
