Mark, It is partially an opinion. Some of it is fact supported by comprehensive statistics. Some is simply common sense, as those that feel helpless often turn to organized religion for solace. They are open to self-deception and like country yokels drawn to the pageantry of the seedy traveling carnival barker, flock to the dramatic sounding words of the corner preacher or TV evangelist.
