I think that if CPQ has its inventory in shape that will be good news for the whole sector, it will eliminate issues of whether CPQ pricing will affect Dell profits. I'm not sure what 'big show' Dell has before next earnings. Dell seems to be in a little doldrum where good news does not drive it up much, but likewise bad news is sloughed off. I'm not exactly complaining about either Dell or CPQ at the moment, looking forward to a relaxed summer watching these babies grow.

Lee,

Looks like serious consolidation going on in the industry. CPQ has 17% of the market; we know that DELL is growing about 50% or more per year in about ~10-15% growth market. Am guessing that the smaller companies are losing.

DELL should do very well in portables, too. Here one is talking a very high percentage of business customers (DELL's market) who require the most reliable instruments possible. Wouldn't be surprised to see DELL's Year over Year figures be quite impressive! Rumors are >100% in all markets. Wouldn't that be wild!

regards, 3.

Lee, YOY portable revenue growth for DELL is 82% [fQ198 vs fQ197]based on their financials. Taking into consideration the ASP decline the YOY volume growth could very well exceed 90%. No big surprise to those that follow this stock.

Lee and Dog:

Call me sceptical, but wasn't the post by Rudedog a press release from Compaq basically rehasing information that has been out there for a little while already (1st quarter results)...I have also noticed that Dell (and all companies) float these "new items" (rehashed old news) during slow period to support (?) the stock....I don't know why companies do it, actually....I am assuming (especially in uncertain tech times) it is a steadying influence on the stock..part of the Wall Street game.

The fact that CPQ made such gains, and still got clobbered in the quarter would make me look at this announcement as a nuetral, or bad sign....After all, they took share, but couldn't make money....This is not an indication that they can take share AND make money....and especially not an indication that they can (take share AND make money) in Q2...

Am I wrong here? Am open to contrasting views......
