Dog,

Re: "retail and desktops are two completely different product groups with different channels so the kind of swap you suggest just couldn't be done. "

When I go into a retail store I see both CPQ desktops and laptops.
So how can you say that these are two different channels and the swap can not be done?

Re: " I can't see why they would have done any quid pro quo on laptops, that just adds to the channel inventory problem. "

CPQ cut its price protection for the dealers so they did not legally have to accept returns. However, if they chose to negotiate a swap it may work to their advantage short term. First, it clears the channels for new PII based desktop products. Second, it offsets this quarter's revenue and profit hit on the books. The motivation to do this could be very powerful given the magnitude of the reported writedown
(1 billion dollars).
