I haven't studied their home page in a while, but I'd guess that the market cap cutoff depends on the overall market valuation. If all of the companies increase in market cap, due to a huge bull rally like we've seen over the last year, then the cutoff (i.e., the market cap of the 1,000th largest company) is likely to go up as well.

My guess is that the impact of being dropped from the Russell 1000 into the Russell 2000 is much less than the impact of being dropped from the S&P 500. In fact, as far as index funds go, I don't know if the Russell 2000 has a smaller or larger ownership base than the 1000.

Was ADPT in the S&P 500?
