Shorting question......

This is probably a _very_stupid_question_, but I've never heard a clear and concise answer. Is there a defined time limit before your broker can/will require you to cover? How long can you sit on a short sell when not "against the box"? ...I'm assuming there would not be a time limit if shorting against your own account....

Thanks for helping clarify this for me...

Regards,

David

Steve,
I just can't take not giving input anymore. I can pick stocks for the long term with you or anyone else. Been very good at it. So good at it that I just had to shorten the time frames that I held stocks to make even more money with less risk. I was going to day trade by the end of this year, had the plan, had everything. Let me tell you something from the heart everyone, if you want to lose a lot of money fast just start trading and not be an expert on it. I have gone back to what I am good at, I've learned my lesson, and I would ask everyone here to look at things very carefully before doing anything. Know yourself. Some people can make day trading sound like the next Amway. I buy 500 shares of XYZ for my pension because it is a sound company and tomorrow it goes down. Who cares? Let's see what it looks like 25 years from now. You buy 1000 with 500 on margin and it goes down 1/2 you've got a problem.

Everyone needs to admit what they are good at and do that. If day trading was as easy as it sometimes sounds we would all do it and all be rich. I am sure if I had got a faster server, more charts etc., I could have gone really broke instead of just gotten a lesson! :)
