Judy, I'm not familiar with the details of the retail effort, but at first blink it makes much more sense than having resellers do the BTO. However, it still leaves quality control,forecasting and inventory control as potential problem areas.

Why would Dell need to change its BTO model? If you read the HBR article I think you'll find that the current approach is more than adequate. If you look at the relationship Dell has with major customers such as Boeing and Kodak I think that there too you will find that service seems exemplary, so I'm not sure what you are referring too. Small server customers would presumably be service through third parties.
