What would Cramer like Roth to say? "We want Bay and Ascend, but only after every Tom, Jim and Harry have driven the stock price to Pluto." ??????

Nortel CEO noted that company may buy a number of small
networking firms, as smaller companies are easier to integrate (Cisco model)...
Does this eliminate Bay?... Also suggested that firm wasn't
interested in adding company with strong ATM presence... Would suggest that
FORE and Ascend are unlikely candidates...

You know, I've been listening curiously to all this talk about Nortel buying Ascend, and I don't think it makes much sense. Nortel is already pretty strong in ATM, and has just about the same ATM strategy as Ascend. There would be a lot of redundancy between Ascend and Nortel. In fact, I think they view each other as primary competitors in the carrier ATM core switching market, now that Cisco has dropped out.

Lucent is the one that really needs Ascend. Lucent does not have a multi-service ATM switch. They will need it, if they want to play in data networking.
