Dr. Tech,

>> As far as the RFP...BEL RFP for initial deployment was submitted in the begining of 1997 and here we are in mid-98 and deployment in fall. RFP now for DMT-phase is right in line for early 2000 deployment. <<

I kind of agree with this line of thinking, but let me put a different spin on it....

BEL's RFP for initial deployment was submitted in early 1997. Since that date BEL has been qualifying lines, filing with the FCC and waiting for the DSC/WSTL CAP dual line cards. BEL has been planning for the last 12 months, I don't see why it would take 12 additional months to switch from CAP to DMT. DMT will work on those qualified lines. When BEL's accounting, marketing and sales departments see ~$400/line equipment cost, they will want to switch. It will make BEL's service costs more competitive against cable.

Can you tell me technically why BEL wouldn't switch to a DMT solution?

>> It would be very stupid for ALA to upset a winning team and possibly not even benefit from the DSC participation. <<

I don't follow this line of thinking. I would think BEL is thrilled that ALA is merging with DSC. This will just place additional pricing pressures on the other equipment manufacturers. As for Alcatel being "stupid", I certainly wouldn't question Alcatel's strategy in ADSL. If ALA can provide a standards based DMT solution at a great price on the DSC platform, I think that's pretty darn smart. I think BEL would be interested in this solution. Let's not forget that Wesell/DSC is only for CAP, we're still waiting for the DSC/WSTL DMT agreement.

As for Telechoice, I'm glad to see Westell is trying to clarify the BEL initial deployment announcement... until later.
