F. Lynn, Datek shows that KTEL is marginable. Perhaps it is just your broker that has made it unmarginable? Just because a stock is on the Fed list as marginable, does not require a broker to lend money against it. It's quite possible your broker sees KTEL as "too risky". Datek won't lend money against ENMD, for some reason. KTEL they will let you buy long on margin, but I am always rejected when I put in test orders to see if they are lending it again.

A stock can be marginable and still not be available to borrow.

Most stocks over $5 which are listed on major exchanges or on the NASDAQ are marginable (which ONLY means that you can borrow against them in a margin account, if you own some).

However, to SHORT a stock it must be both MARGINABLE and AVAILABLE to borrow. Many of the smaller issues often are not available, because there just aren't a whole lot of shares out there and often a lot of people trying to borrow them.
