Eric: >>> To date, there are in excess of 6,000 units already deployed... <<< I obtained this figure both from several sources (non-ALA but from Telcom folks) and double confirmed it with the PC supplier who is participating in the project. SingTel has a promotion going on with several PC vendors whereby they are bundling selected models of new PCs with the neccesary items needed to be on the high speed broadband network (the non technical description used for the ADSL network). At the rate people are taking up the offer, the number will exceed 10,000 before the year is out. FWIW these are reliable figures. >>> So Odi, is the unit next to you an 8Mb unit? <<< Very good question... I don't know really. I suspect not. What I know is that over at the CO end, they DO set a limit to the bandwidth. My own take is that there are problems running this at higher speeds. I checked the ALA documentation that came with my unit and nothing was mentioned inasfar as specs is concerned. The stickers on my unit mentioned mfg date of Oct '97. At the current speeds now available, the broadband service does seem to meet all the objectives the service provider set out to do so it may a moot point to them, I don't know... The situation reminds me back to the older IBM days. They don't have the best or latest technology products but they do get what they have then into the doors of customers first, then upgrades later. I think ALA executes this much better than WSTL. I sure wish WSTL would show actual deployments...... PS. FYI, on a recent download of a Oracle Video Server client SW (used for video-on-demand applications over the hi-speed network) it took me about 8 seconds to download the 2.1 MB file into my PC. Regards, A patient WSTL holder hoping for the best..
