I happen to agree with you, that Intel's high-end chips, including the late Merced, will eventually dominate the workstation and server markets. But a case can certainly be made for the Alpha, if Compaq really does push it. For one thing, it looks like the same version of 64 bit NT will run on Alpha and IA64 chips like Merced. That means that for the first time ever, the Alpha will compete on essentially even terms with Intel's chips.

Alpha was always faster than Pentiums, but always needed special versions of NT that were incompatible with Intel's version of NT, and this was probably the thing that hurt Alpha most. If this is no longer the case, and if Compaq really pushes Alpha and also sells it to other box-makers for use in their own systems, then maybe the Merced delay really will prove a blessing for Alpha. Too soon to tell though.
