And let's not forget that Compaq is MUCH bigger than SGI. ANd Compaq used to be an Intel ally. That relationship is starting to look quite shaky now.

I agree. But MS won't have a 64bit NT until the year 2000 (at the very earliest). So until then, the market will be somewhat limited. Intel isn't after every niche. Like MS, Intel goes after the mass market, and they continue to expand the mass market. The very high end will continue to be Sun, IBM, HP and digital on a variety of chips for at least a few years.

Besides, how will Alpha compete on price with Merced? How will HP, Sun and IBM view Alpha now that their chief rival in the server market owns the chip? Alpha will probably do better than MIPS and it may have a nice niche at the high end, but I don't think it will hurt Intel. I think they can both exist with Intel taking the lions share of the market.
