>>I think it would be more likely to crash then and there, rather than write bad registry entries. <<

The Compaq machine did freeze right away. I am not sure it was a registry thing. The error message when I rebooted was cannot load registry. The whole C drive was inaccessible as I could not find it even when I booted DOS from a floppy. Is this a problem in the MBR ( Master Boot Record?) Where is the MBR? Is the registry in the MBR? How does one restore a MBR without a total reformat?

BTW the slow machine is the Aptiva and it has not had a total crash in the three + years that I have owned it. Most (95%+) of my crashes occur while surfing.

Modems

What is the difference between a Winmodem and a Faxmodem? Is a Winmodem a "Windows" modem? US Robotics has both options, the FAX modem costs about $20 more. (both ISA)

I am still vacillating on my computer upgrade. It seems like the only reason (for me) to build a socket seven system is to save my Pentium 200 MMX chip ($100). Components that I was intending on using in the socket seven system could also be used in a BX system.

I checked out the EPOX socket seven board. The manual is not on a par with the ASUS, AOPEN and ABIT manuals. EPOX indicates that the boot options are A, C, and SCSI (I think) or C, A, and SCSI. The manual is not very detailed with the bios description and I assume there are other boot options but I would prefer not to guess on this issue.

I was at a local computer store (Fry's) last night looking for a quick local fix . They had the IWill XA 100 socket seven board. I looked for info on the web and they did not even have a manual available for download.

Sheets of paper and half manuals might be ok for the experienced but I need complete documentation. I also want to know what I am getting into before making the mobo purchase.
