Jawd - fantasy , that's the key word , alright. Do you honestly think that one website ,
which is basically just a phone-order concept on a computer , is going to kill convential
retailing ? You gotta be kidding.

William,

I keep saying Amazon reminds me of Sears except Sears made money in its early days as it does today. Dng the early days, there were no phones for catalogue sales so mail was needed to place an order. Then phones as you stated and now the internet if one wishes. However, catalogue sales is the weakest part of Sears present earnings. They almost decided to scrap it entirely.

There is a lt more to retailing than just obtaining a product. Shopping is entertainment for many. It is a date for young people, a day out for the married folks and a way to spend time with friends for the middle aged too. People like to walk browse and talk while they shop. They are not always out on a mission to make a purchase. Sometimes, no purchase is planned but one may occur when something is scene that become desired. That is an impulse purchase as we all know.
The net will have a much in shopping. Particularly those items that are commodities and are of the type that are boring to locate in stores.

I am amazed at the hype of how the net will change the picture of shopping. Shopping in its present sense is not much different than 500 years ago. We have added the automobile, phone, credit cards, and other features to shopping but retailing is pretty much the same. What worked in the 16th century, will work today.
