Hi Meathead; I retired as an engineer 60 days ago. I know exactly what is going on in those trenches. Most of my buddies will be in those trenches on Monday, and I read the EE-Times when it gets sent to me each week. I still think in terms of gates and processing costs per square mm, intellectual property, test vectors, pin counts, NREs, etc, and I know this industry backwards and forwards. So don't try and pass me off as some "retired engineer" "disconnected" from the trenches. I am at the top of my form, and this is my area of expertise. (Actually, if my daytrading fails me, I'll be back in those trenches again. And I miss the perfection and grace of designing digital works of art, beauty, technology and mathematics, so I won't complain too much if I return.) I believe the PC industry will not die, but will be hit hard by the sudden decrease in ASPs. I know that Dell is not the same as the PC industry, but it is a lot easier to grow fast in an increasing market rather than a decreasing one. As far as the $299 black and white (i.e. green screen or whatever) computer goes, it would be enough for a lot of people, particularly my brother and my ex, both of whom merely want a word processor, not some desktop-server behemoth. I wonder what the market share of monochrome notebook computers is as a percentage of all notebooks? I would be interested in the number, and I bet you have access to it. It probably has changed over the years... But the $399 computer announced recently includes a color monitor. (Maybe even a free mouse pad!) These are going to be standard computers for students in the US, and businesses in the less well off portions of the world. There is no question that sales of the above will impact sales in higher classes, as users choose cheaper machines to reduce expense. This is elementary economics theory. So Dell, will have to dive into the low end. I am still getting conflicting evidence as to whether Dell is going to hit this market hard, or push into higher end computing, or both. Presumably both. Ought to be fun to watch. Give it 12 months. -- Carl
