Bilow, this industry moves fast, 60 days is a long time, everything has changed since then, you're out of touch<ggg> Seriously, new markets continue to open up and ultra cheap PC's will appeal to one of many segments IMO. I don't expect it to cannibalize the high end. The impact will be on the low end. It's todays $799 PC's that will be challenged. Don't expect Dell to dive into this territory... that would be suicidally ignorant of management. I watch the numbers and work closely with PC marketing experts. If all price points drive to sub-500 and this becomes a dominant segment, I'll have as much advance warning as anyone... and I'll divest myself of PC stocks. Expect Dell's low end offerings to follow corporate market demands. After all, they are the best barometer for segment. Their low end price points will be driven by a combination what Intel has to offer and customer requirements... not AMD, not CYRIX... at least not for the next 3 years. In my opinion, the term "Personal Computer" is being used too loosely anymore. These Ultra Cheaps are really going to be IA's. Face it, they will be fairly fixed function devices with limited to no upgradability or configurability so there will be nothing "Personal" about personalizing these devices. They will primarily be used for most rudimentary of tasks so there goes the "Computing" aspects of the device. It may be able to compute, but it really won't be used to compute much of anything beyond the transparent, non-user specified calculations needed to adhere to ISA. How will the home segment use these ultra-cheaps? 1. Games? They will be a terrible platform for this 2. Internet/Email? Absolutely 3. Word processing? Probably, but you must be literate and own a printer (an extra $99) 4. Spreadsheets? Less likely 5. Banking/Commerce? Very likely Information, transactions and communications. All this can be done today much cheaper with a $99 Web TV device. 2 of these things can be done with a telephone. MEATHEAD
