JCD: If it hangs in there today, you may be right about the bottom.

You've probably noticed several product announcements today. All are SCSI products. (I guess the company hasn't been reading--or doesn't buy--the various comments on the slow, painful death of SCSI ;-]):

1: Announcement on four new SCSI cards--two variations of the AHA-2940U2W (FWIW, Adaptec's 80MB/sec Ultra2 SCSI card only started shipping earlier this year) for the desktop/workstation market and two with 64-bit PCI technology for the server market. Three will be available (only to computer OEMs) early next month and the fourth in September with prices ranging from $180 to $320.

2: Announcement of its first Ultra2 SCSI Protocol silicon product--the AIC-43C97, intended to compel "developers to migrate their peripheral designs to this new technology and to offer products that take full advantage of the speed and flexibility of Ultra2." Sounds like a good idea to me. Samples available in July.

3: And a new version of EZ-SCSI, which is campatible with Windows 98 and includes Web-CheckUp (for the latest drivers) and other useful utilities. Comes with all host adaptor kits.

Other news: Today through Wednesday is the Network Storage '98 conference in Monterey. Adaptec will participate in Session 4--"Arrays in Storage Networks - Applications and Connectivity" along with Symbios, Mylex, Ancor, Ciprico, and Transoft Technolgy.

Some arcane data: Forbearance from you tech wizards please, but I recently learned that the 400Mbps (bits) figures we hear for some 1394 devices is actually slower than the 80Mb/sec (bytes) offered by the Ultra2 SCSI card. (To exceed that rate, 1394 would have to get to 800Mbps--which is the rate TI just announced for its 1394 product projected for the end of this year.) Clarifications would be welcome.

>> Well Starowl, I'm thinking we are at a bottom at 13 today;

Don't we wish. Close was 12-1/2, after being up early in the day. This is getting beyond ugly.
