Hee hee! I think that men are hunters by nature. A big part of the variety is the novelty of the partner, and the huge ego boost that comes with "bagging" someone who was a stranger not that long ago. So - having multiple wives would be a lot like trying to eat the whole pack of gum at once. Yes, there's a hellacious flavor burst at the beginning, but oy, the jaw muscles tire in a hurry. A stick at a time is the better procedure... and when you're done the gum still fits in its wrapper.

Your typical guy would rather have a wife and a few girlfriends. All the fun - none of the paperwork.

I think the tendency toward polygamy is not such a big deal. I think it's blunted by the desire to have a trusting, long-term relationship. After all, since the dawn of time men have been interested, involved fathers. I think monogamy is what gave the most stable society. Where polygamy did occur - it was usually the chieftain who practiced it, and it was about wealth&power more than sex.

Btm line: If I were rich enough to have multiple wives - I'd better have some socked away to retain a head eunuch <cough> administrative assistant!

This one's almost as funny as the story about the Indian couple who had to be uncoupled.
