I use the "intelligent" argument to encompass your situation as well. Had you not been smart/informed enough, you may have ended up on the roles. i.e. you were smart enough to know better. The problem with earners vs. non-earners is it introduces a class and tax argument. The dems just want votes, and the easiest way to get them is an uninformed, unemployed electorate.
