MCI Offers to Sell More Internet Units

Klein also sought to address concerns raised in a letter from lawmakers last week that U.S. antitrust regulators were allowing European authorities too much sway in the analysis of mergers of U.S. companies such as the $37 billion combination of MCI Communications Corp. (MCIC - news) and WorldCom Inc (WCOM - news).

''We have heard concern in this regard, specifically as to the MCI/WorldCom merger,'' he said.

''While cooperation can be very beneficial in cases where two different antitrust authorities are reviewing the same matter, we will not permit such cooperation to effect the independence of federal antitrust enforcement in the United States with respect to our review of the MCI/WorldCom merger or any other matter,'' Klein said.
