Gabriel,

Re: Channel Inventory Opinions

Lehman Bros. Has a number of reports that give other data on the depth of the channel inventory.

lehman.com

Their report on Vanstar Corp. states that channel inventory was at 73 days at the end of the April quarter. By the end of May they were at 59 days. Vanstar's management is trying to achieve 45 days of inventory by the end of July. This is 6 to 7 weeks by the end of July.

They also note that they expect pricing pressures to ease as the channel inventory levels decline.

We still have a disconnect with CPQ stated numbers for channel inventory levels. They have stated that they expect to have 4 weeks by the end of June. Vanstar says they expect to achieve 6 to 7 weeks by the end of July. In the words of the X-Files: "the truth is out there".

Regards,

Jim Kelley

Gabriel, according to the article Niles, readers may recall, was the first analyst to see that the company [Compaq] was building up one heck of a channel inventory problem in the fourth quarter of 1997.

I thought some of the folks on this thread were first, having made those predictions last summer.
