Tom and Jim:

I heard today on CNBC that Kurlak made some comments about semi-conductor mfgs closing down some capacity. No specifics were given, but the thinking was that we are nearing the bottom of the overcapacity problem. This news heartened me more than the other recent vlsi specific announcements. Once the mfgs start closing down the old .5 and .3 lines, the overcapacity problem will start to dry up, the sox index should move and vlsi along with it.

Can anyone advise me if vlsi chips are used in Sega gambling machines? I saw these on a recent trip to a Casino in St. Martin. Very cool. I saw three different types of machine...horse racing, roulette and bingo. These large machines have about 12 seats around them with a touch screen at each station. The players can place a variety of bets in 25 cent increments, the average bet being about a dollar. There are no Casino personnel needed, the machine runs the entire operation, keeping track of all bets and payoffs. The Casinos must love them because the action is non-stop and there are no labor costs associated with the operation.
Anyone with knowledge of the innards of these things, please check-in.
