Once the mfgs start closing down the old .5 and .3 lines, the overcapacity problem will start to dry up, the sox index should move and vlsi along with it.

First, I'm not sure that the problems at VLSI have anything to do with overcapacity. They are driven by: inventory work-offs at their customers, seasonality in cell phones, and drop in consumer demand from Asia. Second, the only plant shut downs I've heard of have been temporary closures of some Korean DRAM plants. No real effect likely on VLSI.

Hi Joe,

First a little semi 101: .3 and even .5 micron are not "old". What you see is closing down of .7, .8 and above. Cypress is a good example.

Second, VLSI outsources a large portion of production, taking advantage of cheap foundry capacity. The new Malaysia fab is still a year away. Jim
