Celeron/Mendocino without Slot 1:

zdnet.co.uk

Let me remind everyone the reasons Intel introduced the Celeron are as followed:

1) To block AMD/Cyrix/IDTI from eating all the market share for the sub-$1000 computers.

2) To kill the socket 7 ASAP and to make slot 1 the standard.

3) To get rid of the excess PII silicon that are produced from their 4 0.25um fabs.

This strategy at first seems like an excellent idea; however, it failed miserably because

1) It is LATE TO THE MARKET!
2) Celeron is slower than Pentium in business applications
3) It is too expensive to manufacture compared to the Pentium and Slot1 motherboard is too expensive.
4) K6-2 negated any advantages the Celerons have over the K6.

Now Intel decided to put the Mendicino on a new socket 470 to compete in costs. This strategy will allow them to get rid of the cost of the daughtercard and dump all the cost to the MB makers. This is an excellent news to AMD/Cyrix/IDTI. Instead of CONSOLIDATING their strategy, Intel decided to split their military to fight 2 fronts. The Mendicino is a sure loser. Why?

A) There is no future for the Mendocino. No upgrade. Can't upgrade to a PII. No one would want to buy this system.

B) MB will be expensive as hell since everyone who wants to make MB for Mendocino must retool.

C) Piss off OEMs.

D) Mendocino has no 3D engine.

I love this new brilliant idea from Barrett. He must be working for AMD. Mendocino will be another dog. Sorry to disappoint the Intallebees who are waiting for this chip.
