Dale,
Jerry Sanders has been on a kamakazie mission against Intel for years.
He got a taste of success with the 386-40. The 486 was too late and the K5 was a dud but the K6 brought renewed hope. 3DNow pushes it right up against the pentium II where Intel says it counts, the Gaming power of the FPU. This is yet another thorn in the side of Intel.
Will AMD make money? Based on what I'm hearing they could well return to profitablity in the 3rd quarter. Not this quarter because of weakness in Asia for the other AMD products. The K6 may not be the drag on earnings in the 2nd quarter that everyone thinks it will be.
Cyrix/NSM. They are taking the steps to turn it around, fabbing their own chips, trying to get away from competing directly with intel and calling lost customers of their other products to try to get them back but it's probably going to take another 2 quarters to return to profitability...so right now it's a wait and see game.
I'm very anxious to see how the PC market evolves. Will it end up like the like so many other electronic lines with even greater distinction between a low end consumer line and a high end professional line? For instance, there are CD-ROM players for over $1000 for professional studios and the are the $100 consumer models for home use. Same for VCRS, stereo equipment and the like.
Intel will definitely dominate the high end...but should they venture into the low end? What happens if the Mendocino becomes Intels hottest selling chip?
