Layoffs seen at VLSI

VLSI Technology Inc., a San Jose-based maker of custom miconductors, is expected to announce layoffs soon in San Jose and perhaps elsewhere. President and Chief Operating Officer Rich Beyer told an informal gathering of San Jose employees last week that layoffs were likely, to meet budget goals, said VLSI spokesman David Harrah. However, Harrah said information on the timing or extent of possible
layoffs was not available. Revenues and profits plummeted last quarter
after setting records in the second half of 1997, and Wall Street expects another disappointing quarter. VLSI, which employs 1,200 in San Jose and 2,500 worldwide, last laid off 150 employees in Silicon Valley in 1997.
