wants to see clear change directions in applications

Yes this is the whole problem. The apps numbers look horrible, if Orcl had reported .32 but the apps business was up 25% the stock would rally today.

The problem is, this weakness is hard to read due to the Y2K preoccupation of many companies. Mfg software will not get a y2k boost in late 98 or 99 (well we got one, but it was last year). Mfg has a wide planning window so the y2k fixes go in early vs. some of the other apps.

The other huge problem with Orcl apps is Psft which is now a much stronger company than Orcl in apps. The psft acquisition strategy is much better than the Orcl nih strategy. Probably a combination of these 2 things (y2k + psft) led to these horrible apps numbers.

If Larry gets agressive and buys an apps company (I2 etc) then that will signal the analyst community that Oracle apps are not dead. Also psft will actually have some competition as an acquirer for some of these choice companies, where they do not now.
