Night..The aspect of the Asian economic problems is also reflected on US business in indirect ways. In the Pacific NW where I live Boeing, wheat and other agricultural commodities, shipping from seaports, forest products, and all the ancillary businesses associated with these industries are affected. Because these industries represent a sizable piece of the NW economy a company like CPQ can feel the impact because those industries directly affected and the people that work in them no longer feel as free to spend money on products they can put off buying or not buy at all with discretionary income. So the problem may not be as apparent as it may seem if only looked at from a direct exposure.
I might add too, that 6 years ago the US found itself in the same situation with the valuation of the dollar, somewhere around 80 Yen/$. The dollar was supported by various banks and countries and the result speaks for itself. So don't pay a lot of attention to those who discount the impact intervention can have.
