Dale,<.. distinction without a difference. As far as
the consumer is concerned they appear to be copies. That is
what is lowering Intel profits. That is what concerns me as
an Intel investor. >

I was under impression that investors in technology
sector are somewhat more literate than an average
consumer:) Now I see I was wrong.

In your position I would be more concerned about this
difference. You do not need any chip design expertise
to understand the importance of this general difference:
with the in-house design technology these AMD/Cyrix/IDT
are now independent of Intel mistakes. Backed with the
MS Windows compatibility, they can move independently
in the right market. So far it seems that they can do
this quicker than Intel. Examples: sub-$1000 PC market,
3D-Now game accelation instructions, integrated MediaGX.

<I invested in Intel because of its chip design expertise.
Intel has superb engineers and management with a proven
track record of overcoming difficulties in the market place.>

Not anymore. You must know that the past does not guarantee
future results. The head has gone (with his communist-inspired
"culture" and discipline), some other high
managers suddenly "felt the strong desire to spend more
quality time with his family."

In technical area Intel is simply trying all permutation
from just two components: PPro core and L2 cache (size
and location). Apparently nor enough to gain consumer's
confidence and force them to buy "high-end" without
compelling reasons. So far a consumer appears to be
even smarter than you... sorry for the "instability".
