Trey, It's interesting to see the vehemence with which some people attack, isn't it. I've been in the semi industry long enough to know that layoffs are part of the trade. Look at TXN who just announced they're selling their DRAM business to MU and that they will be laying off another 8% of their work force. Is anybody about to believe that TXN is going to sink? I don't think so. I don't know what's up with VLSI's layoff plans as reported by the SJ Mercury News, but to say that a couple of years ago they already laid off people and are doing it again, "see, that means they're in BIG trouble" -- Give me a break. I used to work for TXN and watched them go through 8 or 9 layoffs in 5 years (more if you count other sites where I didn't work). It's the way they did business. They're still doing pretty well as far as I can see. Semiconductor manufacturers run through cycles in a big way. It's nothing new and nothing surprising. For the doomsayers who say that it's the end of the line for margins, that all semiconductors are commodities, all I can say is wait and see. They could have said the same thing 15 years ago, 10 years ago, 5 years ago. And time has already proven that wrong. In between there were some very good years and some very bad years and some that were well in-between. The sector keeps growing just the same. I don't care what viewpoint is presented whether it be excited about the stock or totally against it, but I'd rather hear a discussion that was well thought out with sound arguments without hysteria. That type of discussion helps us make (relatively) rational decisions rather than (completely) emotional ones. BTW, I'm long VLSI and think that we'll all be very happy by year's end. Knock on wood..... Good luck to all, Ed
