It would hamper the market makers...

in their relentless efforts to maximize the profits they scrape away from small investors. They are already losing parts of their information monopoly when information like level 2 quotes starts to become affordable. We would need either a politically powerful group of small investors such as AAII (but again, powerful enough fight the influence of MM's with the SEC--AAII is not politically active at all) or maybe some congressman who wanted to advance his career by championing small investors to pressure the NASDAQ or SEC for this.

Even then, selling stocks short is still so widely viewed as unpatriotic, (rather than seen as contributing to the efficiency of the markets). Still, it is unbelievable that in the information age, we are kept in the dark on open short interest so much.

BTW, happpy to see AMZN swinging your way. Its ahead of itself. FWIW, am still long-term (i.e. 2 to 3 year) bull. I figure they've got connections & the power to end up with a significant etailing market share, or that somebody with deep pockets may buy them. As to where the price will be in 3 or 6 months, probably down some, but am utterly clueless.

Best Regards,
