>>>A household or business will be able to conduct multiple phone calls, receive faxes, run new advanced applications
and use the Internet at speeds up to 100 times faster than today's conventional modems -- all simultaneously through a single connection. The need for multiple phone lines will be eliminated, and applications such as high-speed online
interactive services, video calls and telecommuting will be readily accessible and less costly. Use of the Internet will be so fast that typical pages on the World Wide Web will pop up almost
instantaneously.<<<

The need for multiple phone lines will be eliminated to make multiple phone calls! There will be a huge number of 2nd, 3rd phone lines that will be dropped from service. I'd like to hear how that works. Anyone have details???

>>>In addition, Sprint's ION leap-frogs the bandwidth-only capabilities of DSL and cable modems. ION provides customers with robust voice, video and data services, along with the capability to customize multiple services, all combined with access to unlimited bandwidth, available on demand, all the time, whether they are across town or across the country.<<<

Leapfrogging cable modems! The advantage of having voice and direct dial telephone numbers.

>>>Unlike Sprint's ION, the emerging carriers networks cannot allow
customers to "grab" bandwidth as needed. While the emerging carriers claim to be deploying networks to selected U.S. cities, Sprint's high-speed integrated network is deployed across the country and within most major cities through metropolitan broadband network rings.<<<

Many people were not aware of Roger's Cable high speed cable modem service when it debuted Nov12, 1996. In fact, many did not believe the cable modem tech was viable at the end of 1996. They said that cable modems were only highspeed one way. Others said that it would take forever to build out the HFC network(fib-op/cable). The cable modem service is available in approx. 50% of Canadian households at this very time.

If what I'm reading is correct. This is not only a bomb to be dropped on competing companies, but a neutron bomb. This network is already deployed! Death from above!

DH, re:"press release about Sprint ION. Caveat Emptor"

Thanks for this information. Yes - these are all the right words. This is the way its got to be. Let's hope they are aggressive about deployment.

I suspect they with fight for business customers. The home market is pretty much still captive of the Bellco's. I would LOVE to see a credible plan to crack this obstacle. As it is the focus is on competition between Bellcos and Cable providers. Both of these companies are culturally exploitive and protective of old equipment. I expect both to drag butt as much as they can.

Perhaps it will be wireless? I've seen some really exciting initiatives with high bandwidth wireless services. Anyone - please post your favorite wireless data news...
