One suggestion is to load the driver and versions of config.sys and autoexec.bat you need to access your CD-ROM on your Windows 95 Startup floppy disk. I realize it is to late now but it does provide a way around Windows 95 Setup not liking your version of DOS. In my opinion the Windows 95 Startup floppy disk is a lot more useful when these files are added to it. With the appropriate files added to the startup floppy disk the startup floppy can be used to implement a clean install of Windows 95.

>> Some I can only figure out by comparing to the way Compaq fit the cables together. <<

The side of the flat ribbon cable with the red stripe always gets connected to the Pin 1 side of the mating connector. Sometimes it is hard to find the Pin 1 side of the mating connector. You might have to remove a hard disk or a controller from your cabinet to read the labels. But I have yet to find a drive or controller that didn't have Pin 1 identified.
