The Bible makes no charge against RATIONAL self interest: reasonable, sane, logical, of sound mind; such is not the antipode of selflessness. Ecclesiastes teaches: "There is nothing better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and make his soul enjoy good for his labor ... it is from the hand of God." 2:24 "I know that there is nothing better than to rejoice, and to do good so long as they live. And also that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy good in all his labor, is the gift of God." 3:12 "Be thou not righteous overmuch neither make thyself overwise: why shouldest thou destroy thyself?" 7:16 Jehovah put us on this magnificent planet to rejoice; it delights Him to see us exult in the thrill of living. "A feast is made for laughter, and wine maketh glad the life; and money answereth all things." 10:19 "Go thy way, eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with a merry heart; for God hath already accepted thy works. Let thy garments be always white; and let not thy head lack oil. Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of thy life" 9:7 "Honor Jehovah with thy substance, and with the first-fruits of all thine increase: So shall thy barns be filled with plenty, and thy vats shall overflow with new wine." Proverbs 3:9-10 "Let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love." Proverbs 5:19 But neither you nor I is the center of the universe. In our day of self-worship many serve only themselves, with unbridled ambition, greed, lust, pride and hate. Their horizons foreclose til only ego remains and they destroy the social fabric together with their future happiness; jettisoning all hope of eternal life. "What shall it profit a man if he gain the whole world but loses his own soul?" What better employment could there be of our time and energies than to learn to live forever, Terrence? Don
