At the risk of appearing to make more of something than is warranted, apparently there is a big difference in SEA (SEA is probably an over generalization) between public acknowledgement of a problem and private acknowledgement. I think the public acknowledgement of an oversupply problem (admission of a mistake) and the willingness to do something should be watched. The denial and save face alternative would have been to continue production at close to the same level and say that everything would fix itself in due course. That is not happening now.

Not only are the Koreans moving on the supply problem (one can debate their chances of success), but they are moving on tax issues as well:

The Intel deal suggests they are more willing to let the foreigners provide investment capital to help them. This is happening on other fronts as well:

Teri, the DRAM oversupply problem pales in comparison to this...

"Year 2000 bug has some preparing for chaos"

excerpt:
Huss is preparing for what seems like an implausible, yet eerie, scenario.

The 31-year-old computer systems administrator at a small university in
Northern Michigan is stockpiling food, water, medicine and other basic
necessities, and readying a family cabin for himself, his wife and his
year-old baby. He plans to take his money out of the banking system by
August. And he is honing his construction, gardening and landscaping
skills.

I expected articles like this, but not until 1999.

Teri, >But they have spent major bucks to build the fabs, so they are in a catch 22... IMO, Teri<

And, now the 16 RAM chip is obsolete. With Samsung working on the 256 RAM chip. IMO, the smaller firm financially will not be able to keep up with the technoloyy explosion and Moore's law.

I still do not know what is after the 300 wafer and 0.13 or 0.18 semi.

Engineers, do have any advanced ideas?
