Does VLSI have its own manufacturing facilities ? The rumor reported
on CNBC this afternoon that LSI is interested in VLSI is interesting
if VLSI does not have manufacturing facilities because LSI with a
new facility has excess capacity. Comments appreciated from everyone
thanks.

Joe,

IBM announcement has NOTHING to do with competing against VLSI chips. The new chips will be used in the RF front ends vs. baseband processing which VLSI designs and manufs. IBM is a pioneer in SiGe, which is a faster analog/RF process to compete against bipolar (it's faster) and GaAs (it's cheaper). The people who should be worried are the Triquints and Anadigics which are producing GaAs chips, not VLSI. IBM is a competitor though thru the acquisition of Commquest Technologies, which makes CMOS baseband ICs. Jim

joseph--

we will have to see. one has to wonder if this is a processing technology or xmit technology. from the customer list, i would assume the latter.

IBM has a great R&D department. the problem is that they like xerox have problems capitalizing on it.

good luck to all,
trey
