Finally a day when there are more rumors about VLSI than about Clinton's sex life!
Yes, vlsi has its own mfg. plant in San Antonio. It also has an agreement with a Malaysian consortium who will build and own a plant and vlsi will produce chips there. Vlsi is a 20% owner of the consortium. They are converting their own San Antonio plant from six inch to eight inch wafers in late 1998, so it is a modern plant. They sold an outdated plant in San Jose to the consortium last year, and the consortium and vlsi jointly converted this plant to a prototype and development facility.

To add to Joe's comments, VLSI has the capability to produce semiconductors to 0.20 microns at their San Antonio facility. This is highly state of the art and might be better than what a potential suitor currently has. In addition, an acquiring company may not have enough excess capacity in their own plant to meet the demand from VLSI's customers. Stocks don't normally trade 15% higher on 5 times their average volume in a single day unless something is going to happen.
