the $500+billion figure is only part of the story. This amount is not static. What if real estate value and the Nikkei drop, say 10%, as the banks start dumping. Is this $500B number still true, or is it now $700B as borderline loans now go into default.

There is also a definition problem when it comes to bad debt. I believe the current US standard is 3 months. Japan was 6 months at one time. I have no idea what portion of this $500B is 3 months, 6 months or more. Furthermore, is this $500B the amount deemed unrecoverable or just a small percentage?

The most amazing thing about Japan is the total lack of "experts" on the subject with solid opinions backed by quantitative analysis.
