Leave it to me to tie this all together, leaving out GRNO in the process.

As I see it, the common thread is religious fundamentalism, both here and abroad. Keep in mind I have no intention of turning the GRNO thread into some sort of hotbed of religious controversy. I am just having a little personal fun.

John, Pat Robertson predicted among other things, terrorist attacks, comets, and earthquakes. Now all I know is earthquakes, having spent much of my life in California, and all I can say is that Florida is not set up for earthquakes. Of all the states, Florida is the most earthquake free, but the most vulnerable. The geology consists of porous limestone. After a severe drought such as this one, as the water in the aquifer recedes, it leaves empty cavities underground. A long, hard rain which soaks and loads the surface ground will force sinkholes to form because there is no water underground to help support the weight of the new rainwater on the surface. If Florida is shaken at 2 cycles a second, believe me, the entire state will become one huge sinkhole.

Theology is not my thing, but I have never believed there is any connection between natural disasters and human righteousness, but there may be a connection between terrorism and religious fundamentalism.

Senator Lott chooses to ignore an entire generation of medical science with regard to homosexuality. A lot of people believe homosexuality to be a sin because some of the men who contributed to the Bible were homophobic bigots, but that should have no bearing whatsoever on the legal system of the USA. If it does, we are all in trouble.

If God was purposely involved in this El Nino business, one might conclude that God is anti-GRNO along with Richardson and Levitt. I think that is stretching it.

Norm, while I agree with your historical analysis of the post WWI setup of the Middle East, I don't see Ron's article as an anti Albright/Clinton diatribe. I think the Clinton administration is playing the hand it was dealt. I don't think its policy is to destabilize Iran but to very carefully encourage the good guys to move Iran into a more outward looking behavior while not undermining them among the Iranian undecided. I read the article as merely describing the near term effects of shifting policies of the various players and what that could mean in the near future. Africa suffers from the similar artificial border problems caused by the European powers.

The Kurds are by no means united but are torn by deadly internal conflicts. In the short time I have been following Turkish news, I have seen evidence of interfactional treachery. Their Turkish territory is the Southeast which is especially poor. The Northeast had been old Armenia and borders the country of Armenia which may also be a dangerous place for pipelines. If I was running Turkey, I would work on improving relations with all internal and external political interests, especially those who have had a long history of bad experiences with Turkey. One of Turkey's policies is economic development of its Southeast.

Turkey is working hard against pressures of religious fundamentalism.

Norm, I am fascinated by your discussions with Indonesians. Regardless of their Islamic perspective, what interests me is their opinion of the World Bank and IMF. As an example, is one reason for the destruction of the world's rain forests the interest in creating more grazing land for cheaper burgers?

I can see why a country like Mexico would take offense by having our FBI secretly carry out criminal investigations in their country. However, if our country was as corrupt as Mexico and Columbia are, as a private citizen I would welcome a foreign government sending troops to combat the well organized criminal element. It is a breath of fresh air that cities like New York are enforcing all laws, not just the ones they feel are worth enforcing for ideological reasons. Now that all criminal laws are starting to be enforced by the legal system, we see the rate of serious crime in some cities dropping like a rock.

I am very unhappy that there is still a strong political interest in Congress for an anti missile system. I am very unhappy that there is good reason for that interest. The hydrogen bombs on the Russian missiles are still there and there is now talk of an "islamic bomb" since Pakistan has been set up with nuclear technology by the Communist Chinese.

Ron, keep your newsletters coming. You and Norm provide windows into other perspectives which is much better than sitting in the dark.
