Wade, I've been so traumatized by "high hat" that I really prefer the lower ride. Slothrop and Haller in "Prenological Arguments for a Post-Structuralist Ontology" did provide a handy laminated pocket chart showing suggestions for the ideal bill angle based on the revised Standard Cranial Classifications, but the Journal of Hats, Caps and Visors (Winter 1996) is a tough publication to find (almost impossible really).

You're probably right about Beranger. I must've gotten him confused w/ Jesse Belanquer, the French-born, Chicago School hatter/theorist who did the real breakthrough work with pinwheels, though better known for his long-running much-publicized feud with Hidelmann over credit for the invention of the wacky bee-antennae add-on <g>
