Dale,

Re: "Do you think Alpha will be a significant threat to Merced or Xeon?"

No, I do not think that Alpha is ANY threat to Intel ... Alpha is on its
"last legs". With the disintegration of DEC (Alpha -> Compaq, Fab -> Intel),
no company in their right mind would be a "new" customer of Alpha. Compaq might
sell a few to existing customers, but with the uncertainty of future designs,
fab/part deliveries and the general move to NT, new customers will either opt
for Xeon or wait for Merced.

Also, the Alpha is to be manufactured by Samsung ... this is a joke. Samsung
is a DRAM manufacturer that has little experience with high speed CPU processes.
Intel's .18um process which will be released next year (mid '99) will be
well a head of Samsung in performance and yield.

You need to remember that both Sun/SPARC and HP/PA-risc are selling more systems
and are currently taking market share away from DEC/Compaq. These are the
companies that will compete with Merced and Xeon. Both of these companies
plan to offer Merced as well as their proprietary systems beyond 2000. Even
they can see the "handwriting on the wall".

Alpha is history.

Make It So,
Yousef
