Maxtor 2880 vs. IBM deskstar and storagereview.com Street Walker, Sounds like a nice proposal. I doubt ESC will be willing to dicker much, but it will be interesting to see what they have to say. I've posted before on how highly I think of the latest Maxtor line, so I won't belabor it much here. But I would suggest that (1) storage review does not favor the Deskstar over the Maxtor 2880 line, and (2) unless one wants the IBM name and rep (perfectly understandable), there's a strong case to be made for the Maxtor over it. Look at their review of the 11.5 gig 2880 at storagereview.com . It concludes: "By sticking to a cool-running 5400rpm rotational speed, Maxtor has created the ATA speed demon for those of us who prefer to keep the refrigerator in the kitchen. Though it places second in Win95's WinBench 98 to the Medalist Pro ST39140A, the drive claims top honors in every other environment/benchmark combination. Blazing speed along with lack of heat make the drive an ideal alternative to any who were considering the hot-running Seagate. With all our fixation on performance, its easy to forget that to most people, drive capacity is the single most important attribute :). In this area, this DiamondMax also delivers with its whopping 11.5 gigs of storage space. Speed and capacity combined with a decent price. What else could you ask for?" Note that this review was posted after the deskstar 8's review, and it performs better than the deskstar 8 in almost every benchmark according to their database. Indeed, the review of the brand new 14.4 gig deskstar, also on the site, says even it's hardly faster than the much cheaper Maxtor. What's more, at the time of the review, the estimated price was $479. Now, it can be had from TJT at $279 : below $25 a gig (!) and still dropping fast. This is just a hair more than the best price for the 8 gig deskstar 8. And if one doesn't need all that space, one can get other drives in this series for as little as $140--impossible with IBM. (Maxtor just announced their 3400 series, which should ship in the next month or two and be even faster.) Please note, I'm not knocking IBM here. They make excellent drives. I just think that Maxtor--a company that used to ship iffy products--has hit a grand slam with the latest drives, and now sports exceptional customer service. For a price sensitive buyer like me, they're a no brainer. Regards, Dave
