From my perspective in Florida, I can see uses for unmanned aircraft that would deal with local problems. Environmental snobs don't want to see towers for cellphones and the towers themselves are vulnerable to lightning strikes which are far more prevalent here than elsewhere. Unmanned aircraft would be an inexpensive solution.

Florida is now dealing with wildfires caused by extremely dry conditions that are normally found out west. Firefighters say that once a fire gets as large as a living room, there isn't anything they can to do stop it. If a vulnerable area was monitored day and night by unmanned aircraft with infrared detectors, fires would be detected as soon as they start. Then unmanned helicopters could carry containers of fire retardant right over the fires and put them out immediately. Roads wouldn't have to be built and four wheel drive vehicles with men wouldn't have to struggle to get there. Out west especially, it is almost impossible to get to some remote locations in the mountains and by the time firefighters get there, it is too late.

Last week, the temperatures were over 100 in the shade. Since then they have crashed down to around 98 degrees. In the sun it is a lot hotter. Then to have to work vigorously in the vicinity of the mother of all fires is something that doesn't make a lot of sense, especially when it doesn't do a lot of good. I would rather sit in an airconditioned trailer controlling my aircraft, if I was a fire fighter.

I think unmanned aircraft will play a big role in the future.
