Look, the only way the euro will work is if they keep a strict focus on Continent-wide price stability, and ignore the political protestations from the weaker sisters in the Continent. I don't give them enough credit to be able to hold it together when push comes to shove, but if they do, it will be because it will trade remarkable like it was pegged to the dollar. Dollar hegemony indeed.

Things were indeed simpler back when we had the gold standard. Not necessarily better, unless you think endless deflation is a good circumstance, but simpler.
